A Russian author of children's stories about animals. Born into a family of natural scientists in St. Petersburg, he was familiar with nature and animals from an early age, nurturing his observational skills. He majored in natural sciences at the University of St. Petersburg. He deepened his research into nature and animals through academic research trips to remote areas and hunting, and from 1923 he began publishing a series of stories in children's magazines, starting with The House in the Forest (1924). Most of his works are short and medium-length stories, but his masterpiece The Forest Newspaper (1928), which focuses on the lives of animals in the forest throughout the four seasons, stands out for its unique format and rich content.
