Shogo Shiratori

Japanese: 白鳥省吾 - しらとりしょうご
Shogo Shiratori
Born: February 27, 1890 in Tsuchidate, Miyagi
[Died] August 27, 1973. Poet from Chiba. Real name: Seigo. Graduated from Waseda University, Department of English Literature in 1913. Participated in Hitomi Tomei's "Drama and Poetry" and other publications, and published the collection of poems "One Man in the World" (1914) in colloquial free verse, drawing attention as a naturalist poet from Waseda. Resonating with the democratic and nature poetic style of W. Whitman, he published "Whitman Poems" (19) in an abridged translation from "Leaves of Grass." He became a leader of the popular poets school, which included Fukuda Masao, Hyakuta Soji, and Tomita Saika, and became a leading figure in the Taisho era poetry world, rivaling the artistic school of poets, including Hinatsu Konosuke, Hagiwara Sakutaro, Saijo Yaso, Muroo Saisei, and Sato Haruo. His poetry collections such as “Love of the Earth” (19), “On the Way to Paradise” (21), and “The Flag of Coexistence” (22) contain many peasant poems, anti-war poems, and anti-war poems based on democracy.
