...They feed on plankton and suspended organic matter, and spawn in the summer. The shell of the Japanese clam Corbicula leana (illustration) can reach 4 cm in length, 3.5 cm in height, and 2 cm in width, but is usually about half that. When young, the shell is yellowish-green and has a weak luster, but as it grows, it becomes black with charring.
