Karamojong people - Karamojong (English spelling)
They are a Nairo-Hamitic (Para-Nile) pastoral people living in the Karamoja region of Uganda. Their population is estimated at about 350,000. They maintain a traditional transhumance lifestyle and attack neighboring groups to steal cattle. Farming is done by women, and they cultivate millet and sorghum. They consist of 10 sub-tribes, each with its own religious center, but are unified by a complex age-group system and by patrilineal clans that cross the sub-tribes. They do not have a chiefdom, and the basic unit of society is the patrilineal joint family. Marriages are patrilocal and polygamous. As with other pastoral peoples, they place a central value on cattle. In 1979, they were subjected to plundering by remnants of the support of President Idi Amin, who had lost power, and in 1980, they suffered a severe famine due to drought, resulting in many deaths from starvation and the displacement of much of the population.
