Karamono - Karamono

Japanese: 唐物 - からもの
Karamono - Karamono
〘Noun〙① A general term for imported goods from China and other foreign countries. Tomotsu. Tobutsu. ※Onjoji documents - January 4, 882 (Gangyo 6), Chin Taixin's letter "Ima-no-Jitsu-ni- Kyoto -nichi-no-Mori-was-sent one day and received two Chinese goods. " ※Utsubo (around 970-999), Naishi-no-Toku "Whenever the corn people come, they trade Chinese goods." ※Ukiyo-zoshi, Nihon Eitai-kura (1688), 5 "Here, we buy and store Chinese goods that are excellent and inexpensive and will not deteriorate over the years." ② = Karaorimono ( Chinese textiles) ※Manzasu-kei-sozoku-sho (1184), 3 "However, for celebrations, Chinese goods should not be left to chance." ③ The name of an antique. [Glossary] (1) In the Heian period, various expressions were used to describe imported goods, such as "cargo," "miscellaneous," "local goods," "earthenware," and "distant goods." However, "Karamono" was used to describe Chinese products or goods imported via China, and not to describe goods imported from Bohai or Silla. It is thought that the word was used in its literal sense, not to describe imported goods in general.
(2) Although it is possible that "karamono" was pronounced as "tomotsu" or "toubutsu" (as seen in Christian documents and dictionaries from the Middle Ages and the early modern period), it is highly likely that it was pronounced as "karamono" in everyday life, based on examples of writing in kana in "The Tale of Utsubo" and "The Tale of Genji," and the fact that Chinese trade envoys are referred to as "karamono no tsukai" in "Kokinshu" and other works.

(2)「唐物」は、「とうもつ」「とうぶつ」等(中世・近世のキリシタン資料・辞書他にある読み方)と読まれていた可能性もあるが、「宇津保物語」や「源氏物語」の仮名書例や、交易唐物使のことを「古今集」等で「からもののつかひ」といっていることなどから、日常的に「からもの」と読まれていた可能性が高い。
