A colloquial name for a group of capitalists from Yamanashi Prefecture who held great influence in the financial world from the Meiji period to the beginning of the Showa period. Representatives of this group were Ippei Wakao, Keijiro Amemiya, and Kaichiro Nezu, and because they were united by a sense of hometown loyalty, people called them the Koshu Zaibatsu. This is not a zaibatsu in the original sense of the word. During the Meiji Restoration and the subsequent period of corporate growth that accompanied the development of the capitalist economy, when the economy was in a state of rapid change, many of them showed talent for speculation, building up assets through commodity trading and stock investment, and eventually becoming involved in business management.
