Usuyukisou - Usuyukisou

Japanese:
Usuyukisou - Usuyukisou

A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family (APG classification: Asteraceae). The stems grow in clumps, 25-55 cm tall. The leaves are 4-6.5 cm long and have grayish-white fluff on the underside. The basal leaves are not in flower, but the stem leaves grow alternately over the entire stem. The flowers bloom from July to October at the apex of the stem. At the base of the flower there are several star-shaped bracts. The bracts are somewhat sparse, and the surface is densely covered with dirty yellowish-gray fluff. It grows in slightly dry gravel and rock crevices from mountainous areas to high mountains, and is distributed from Japan to the temperate zone of central continental China. It is also thought that the Chinese variety is a different species. There are many variations, and in the high mountains of the Chubu region there is a variety called Mineusyukisou, which has a small overall size and few flower heads, and in the deep mountains of the Kii Peninsula and Shikoku there is a variety called Kousyukisou, which has densely clumping stems and small, spatula-shaped leaves. It is closely related to edelweiss.
