...The animals are skillfully superimposed on the people of feudal society, accurately depicted and satirized, without losing their original characteristics. The oral tradition of J. Grimm and G. Paris was the most popular theory regarding the origin of this animal epic, but in 1914 L. Foulet suggested that the direct source of the oldest chapter, Pierre de Saint-Cloud, was the Latin Isengrimus by Nivardus, a monk from Gan. However, the question of Nivardus's origin remains unresolved, and it is likely that the story was born in India, traveled to Europe through Aesop, and was passed down through written and oral literature.
