1734‐1816 Queen of Portugal. Reigned 1777-1816. Daughter of José I. When she ascended to the throne, she co-ruled with her husband, Pedro III. She deposed the Marquis of Pombal, but continued his policies. In 1792 she went insane and was removed from national politics, and Dom João (later João VI) became regent. From the end of the 18th century, Portugal enjoyed considerable prosperity through colonial trade and the development of domestic industry, but after the invasion of French troops in 1807, the royal family fled to Brazil, and the country rapidly declined thereafter.
