A scholarly monk in Normandy, France, in the first half of the 12th century. Dates of birth and death unknown. His Bestiary (before 1130), the first work of medieval French didactic literature, begins with six syllables and the rest are written in octosyllable verse. He also wrote the Jewels in eight-syllabic lines, both of which are fragments of Greek and Latin knowledge from Aristotle and Solinus, with Christian allegorical interpretations. He also left behind a Calendar, which shows the astronomical knowledge of his time, because medieval scholars needed the knowledge to determine the date of Easter, a movable holiday.
