Glassy state

A supercooled state occurs when a liquid is cooled rapidly under suitable conditions and solidifies without crystallizing. It is a liquid in which the disordered arrangement of atoms, molecules, ions, etc. in the liquid is retained or partially maintained, and the fluidity is extremely reduced.

In addition to silicate glass, which is commonly called glass, glass states are known for sulfur, selenium, metal oxides, sulfides, sulfates, various alcohols, water, sugar, polymer compounds, etc. In glassy substances, a phenomenon (glass transition) is observed in which values ​​such as enthalpy, compressibility, and specific heat change discontinuously in a certain temperature range. The structure of a substance in a glassy state is amorphous or non-crystalline, and unlike crystals, it does not follow the third law of thermodynamics and the entropy at 0 K is not 0. It is known that crystals such as ice, methanol (methyl alcohol), and cyclohexanol also have a non-zero entropy at 0 K, just like glassy substances, but these crystals are named glassy crystals by Shuzo Seki (1915-2013) of Osaka University as they partially retain the glassy state.

適当な条件下で液体を急速に冷却し、結晶化させずに固化した過冷却状態をいう。液体における原子、分子、イオンなどの無秩序な配列がそのまま、あるいは部分的に保持された構造をとり、流動性が極度に低下した液体であるともいえる。

　普通にガラスとよばれるケイ酸塩ガラスのほか、硫黄(いおう)、セレン、金属の酸化物、硫化物、硫酸塩、各種アルコール、水、糖、高分子化合物などのガラス状態が知られている。ガラス状態の物質では、エンタルピー、圧縮率、比熱などの値が、ある温度領域で不連続的に変化する現象（ガラス転移）が観測される。ガラス状態での物質の構造は無定形あるいは非晶質であり、結晶とは異なり、熱力学第三法則に従わず、0Kのエントロピーは0にはならない。氷、メタノール（メチルアルコール）、シクロヘキサノールなどの結晶においても、ガラス状態の物質と同じように、0Kでのエントロピーが0とならないことが知られているが、それらの結晶は部分的にガラス状態を保有しているものとして、大阪大学の関集三（1915―2013）によって、ガラス性結晶glassy crystalと命名されている。
