Urasa

Japanese: 浦佐 - うらさ
Urasa

A district of Minamiuonuma City, Niigata Prefecture. Formerly Urasa Village. A post town on the old Mikuni Kaido road, it also flourished as a riverside town on the Uonogawa River. It is a stop on the Joetsu Shinkansen and JR Joetsu Line. National Route 17 also runs through the area. The area is famous for the Naked Push-and-Push Festival at Bishamon-do (Fukoji Temple) on March 3rd, and efforts are being made to develop tourism there as the trailhead for the Echigo Sanzan Tadami Quasi-National Park.

Naked Pushing Festival
This festival is held at the Fukoji Bishamon-do temple in the Urasa district of Minami-Uonuma City. It originated from people competing to be the first to visit the main deity on display once a year (January 3rd), and it is said that the custom of purifying oneself by washing oneself in water led to people wrestling naked. It is now held every year on March 3rd. Minami-Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture © Niigata Prefecture Tourism Association ">
