…The coastline is lined with parallel dunes, about 5 km wide, and at Pyla it is over 100 m above sea level. The inland area is covered by a layer of sand several tens of metres thick, which forms an impermeable layer of sandstone called arillos less than a metre below the surface. On the other hand, there is no drainage to the sea, except for the River Leil (or Aire), which flows into the Arcachon lagoon. Rainfall accumulates inside the dunes, forming a series of lakes and marshes, and the area is widely flooded during the winter rains. …
