[Died] February 2, 1996. Born Eugene Curran Kelly. Born in Beverly Hills, California. American dancer, film actor, and choreographer. Studied economics at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1938, he moved to New York and appeared in the Broadway musical Pal Joey (1940), followed by musical film appearances and choreography in Cover Girl (1944). After appearing in The Pirate (1948) and American in Paris (1951, Academy Award for Best Picture), he directed, choreographed, and starred in On the Town (1949) and Singin' in the Rain (1952), establishing himself as a leading figure in musical films. He also directed the musical Flower Drum Song (1958) and choreographed George Gershwin's Pas de Deux (1960) for the Paris Opera Ballet. He received an honorary Academy Award in 1951 and the Legion of Honor in 1960.

Died: September 14, 1982. Monaco American film actress. Born into a distinguished family in Philadelphia. After working as a model and a Broadway actress, she entered the film industry in 1951. Her elegance, rare among American stars, took the world by storm, and Hitchcock liked to use her in his films, calling her "sexual elegance." She appeared in a total of 11 films until her retirement. At the height of her popularity in 1956, she married Prince Rainier of Monaco (→Rainier III), retired, and became Princess of Monaco. She died in a car accident in 1982. Her notable film appearances include High Noon (1952), Dial M for M (1953), Mogambo (1953), Rear Window (1954), Applause (1954, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress), The Robbers (1955), High Society (1956), and The Swan Lake (1956).

Kelly, Howard Atwood

Born: February 20, 1858 in Camden, New Jersey
[Died] January 12, 1943, Baltimore. American obstetrician-gynecologist. Known for the invention and improvement of many useful diagnostic tools. From 1889 to 1919, he was the first professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Johns Hopkins University, and contributed to the university's worldwide reputation. He also founded the Kensington Women's Hospital in Philadelphia and the Kelly Hospital in Baltimore. He was the first in America to use radium to treat cancer and cocaine as a local anesthetic. He invented a surgery to fix the uterus to the abdominal wall to treat retroversion, and his improved cystoscope and rectoscope are called the Kelly scope and the artery forceps, respectively. He is the author of Operative Gynecology (2 volumes, 1898, 1906) and many other books.

The most famous outlaw of the 19th century in Australia. His real name was Edward Kelly. In 1877, he was pursued for stealing a horse in the colony of Victoria and fled to the colony of New South Wales. The following year, he formed a gang with his brother and two others, who were also fugitives, and committed a series of robberies in Victoria and New South Wales from 1878 to 1880. In June 1880, he took over the town of Glenrowan, but was surrounded by police, arrested, and hanged in Melbourne Prison. He later became semi-legendary, and was considered the embodiment of the workers' fight against the large landowners.

Born May 31, 1923 in Newburgh, New York. American painter and sculptor. Studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Boston and the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Sculpted the Transportation Pavilion in Philadelphia (1957) and the New York State Pavilion at the New York World's Fair in 1964-65. His works are characterized by simple forms using the three primary colors.

アメリカの産婦人科医。数々の有用な診断器具の改良,考案で知られている。 1889~1919年ジョンズ・ホプキンズ大学の初代産婦人科教授として活躍し,同大学の世界的名声を高めた。また,フィラデルフィアにケンシントン婦人病院,ボルティモアにケリー病院を創立。アメリカで最初に癌治療にラジウムを,局所麻酔にコカインを使った。子宮を腹壁に固定して後屈を治療する手術を考案したほか,彼によって改良された膀胱鏡,直腸鏡はケリー鏡,動脈鉗子はケリー鉗子と呼ばれている。『婦人科手術』 Operative Gynecology (2巻,1898,1906) ほか多くの著書がある。

19世紀のオーストラリアで最も著名な無法者。本名 Edward Kelly。 1877年ビクトリア植民地で馬を盗んだために追われ,ニューサウスウェールズ植民地に逃れたが,翌年同じく逃亡犯人だった兄と他の2名を率いてギャング団をつくり,78~80年ビクトリアとニューサウスウェールズで次々と強盗を働いた。 80年6月グレンローワンの町を乗取ったが,警察に包囲されて逮捕され,メルボルンの刑務所で絞首刑となった。その後なかば伝説化され,大土地所有者に対する労働者の戦いの化身とされた。
