San Cristóbal (English spelling)

Japanese: サン・クリストバル(英語表記)San Cristóbal
San Cristóbal (English spelling)
The capital of Tachira State in western Venezuela. Population 238,670 (1992). Founded in 1561 as a resort for planters at an altitude of 830m in the Sierra de Merida mountains, the city still retains traces of its colonial days. It developed as a center of trade with Colombia, a key transportation point connecting the Maracaibo lowlands and the Llano, and as a distribution center for cacao, coffee, sugar cane, cotton, leather, and other products produced in the surrounding mountain areas. Manufacturing industries such as cement and chemicals have also been booming recently. [Kamitani Hiroshi]
