A butterfly of the family Lycaenidae in the order Lepidoptera. Forewing length is about 17mm. The upper surface of the wings is blackish brown. The underside is lighter brown than the upper surface, and there is a thin white band on the front and back wings, but the one on the rear wings is W-shaped. The rear wings have a tail-like protrusion, but it is very short in males. It is distributed in Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, Sakhalin, the southern part of the Kuril Islands, Korea, northern China, and Europe, and the Japanese species is called the subspecies S. w. fentoni . The closely related S. mera resembles this species, but its wings are rounded, the white band on the underside of the rear wings is not as curved as a W-shape, and the tail-like protrusion is long. It is endemic to Japan, distributed in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The red-winged copper butterfly S. iyonis has a forewing length of about 12 mm, its wings are darker than this species, the white band on the underside is thinner, there is an orange-red pattern on the upper side of the forewing, and the tail is short. It is found in Honshu and Shikoku, and its distribution is localized. Hokkaido also contains the pale-colored copper butterfly S. pruni , which has orange-red spots on the forewings.
