…(5) Pascal, the Hungarian director Gabriel Pascal (1894-1954), who had exclusive film rights to Bernard Shaw's plays and produced and directed Pygmalion (1938) and other works, directed Caesar and Cleopatra (1945), an epic film based on Shaw's novel, which Rank, along with Henry V, hoped would be a stepping stone to conquer the world market. (6) The Archers, founded in 1943 by M. Powell and E. Pressburger, produced, directed and wrote a number of Technicolor films by the celebrated duo Powell-Presburger, including Stairway to Heaven (1946), Black Daffodils (1946) and The Red Shoes (1948). (7) From 1938 onwards, Ealing, run by Michel Balcon (1896-1977), produced a series of films by various filmmakers that would later come to be known as the "Balcon Touch" or "Ealing Comedy."
