A prefecture-level city in the eastern part of the Tibet Autonomous Region, China. It has jurisdiction over one city district and 10 counties (as of 2016). The permanent population is 657,505 (2010). It is located at an altitude of 3,200 meters, upstream of the Lancang River, where the Zachu and Omchu rivers join. The Sichuan Bridge and Yunnan Bridge cross both rivers, and the Sichuan-Tibet Expressway (Chengdu-Lhasa) runs through the city, making it a key transportation hub connecting it to the southwestern provinces. In addition to oat cultivation and livestock farming, the city is also home to a hydroelectric power station and an agricultural machinery repair shop. During the Qing Dynasty, it was the center of the Kham region in eastern Tibet.
