An autonomous republic in Central Asia within the Republic of Uzbekistan. Under the former Soviet Union, it was the Karakalpakh Autonomous Republic within the Republic of Uzbek, but after the collapse of the Soviet Union, it transitioned to the current system and changed its name. It has an area of 165,600 km2 , accounting for about one-third (37%) of the western part of the Republic of Uzbek. Its population was 1,214,000 (1989).
