Karakalpakstan [Autonomous Republic] (English spelling)

Japanese: カラカルパクスタン[自治共和国]（英語表記）Karakalpakstan

An autonomous republic in Central Asia within the Republic of Uzbekistan. Under the former Soviet Union, it was the Karakalpakh Autonomous Republic within the Republic of Uzbek, but after the collapse of the Soviet Union, it transitioned to the current system and changed its name. It has an area of 165,600 ^km2 , accounting for about one-third (37%) of the western part of the Republic of Uzbek. Its population was 1,214,000 (1989). The ethnic makeup is 31.1% Karakalpaks, 31.5% Uzbeks, 26.9% Kazakhs, 5.4% Turkmen, 2.3% Russians, and 2.8% others (1979).
