A species of freshwater fish in the Siluriformes family, a general term for bony fish in the Siluriformes order. The catfish Parasilurus asolus (illustration) is widely distributed throughout most of Japan, Taiwan, the Korean peninsula (except the east coast), and the eastern part of the Asian continent. It inhabits the muddy or sandy bottoms of lakes and ponds in plains and rivers with slow currents, and is often found in areas where aquatic plants grow thickly on the surface of the water. In clear water, it hides in the shadows during the day, and often comes out to hunt for food in the evening and at night, or when the water becomes muddy after rain.
