Kaburaki Kiyokata
Born: August 31, 1878 in Tokyo
[Died] March 2, 1972. Kamakura Japanese painter. Son of novelist and president of Yamato Shimbun, Jono Saigiku, he inherited his mother's surname, Kaburaki. His real name was Kenichi. He began studying under Mizuno Toshikata, an Edo ukiyo-e artist, in 1891. He started illustrating newspapers and magazines early on, and became known for his illustrations for Koyo Ozaki's "Konjiki Yasha," Toson Shimazaki's "Hakai," and works by Kyoka Izumi. In 1901, he formed the Ugokai group, and continued to exhibit at the Bunten exhibitions, winning consecutive awards for "Sumida River Boat Trip" (National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo) at the 8th Bunten exhibition in 1914, and "Kireyuku Murasame" at the next exhibition. In 1916, he formed the Kinreisha group with Hirafuku Hyakusui and Matsuoka Eikyu. Many of his works are excellent pieces that add a fresh artistic touch to the customs, people, and portraits of the Edo and Meiji periods. He became a member of the Imperial Academy of Arts and an Imperial Household Artist, and was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit in 1954. In the same year, he was awarded the Order of Culture. His major works include "The Grave of Higuchi Ichiyo" (1902), "The Day of the Dead" (18), "Tsukiji Akashicho" (27), "The Portrait of San'yutei Encho" (30), "Nigorie" (34), and "Ichiyo" (40). He was also an accomplished writer, and published collections of essays such as "Tsukijigawa" (34), "Ashi no Ha" (38), and "Koshikata no Ki" (61).

日本画家。小説家で『やまと新聞』社長の条野採菊の子で,母方の鏑木姓を継いだ。本名は健一。 1891年より江戸浮世絵派の水野年方に師事。早くから新聞,雑誌の挿絵を描き,尾崎紅葉の『金色夜叉』,島崎藤村の『破戒』,泉鏡花の作品の挿絵などで世に知られた。 1901年烏合会を結成,文展への出品を続け,14年第8回文展の『墨田河舟遊』 (東京国立近代美術館) ,次回の『霽れゆく村雨』が連続受賞。 16年平福百穂,松岡映丘らと金鈴社を結成。作品には江戸時代,明治の風俗,人物,肖像画に清新な芸術味を加えた佳作が多い。帝国芸術院会員,帝室技芸員となり,54年文化功労者。同年文化勲章を受章。主要作品『樋口一葉の墓』 (1902) ,『ためさるる日』 (18) ,『築地明石町』 (27) ,『三遊亭円朝像』 (30) ,『にごりえ』 (34) ,『一葉』 (40) 。文筆にも長じ,『築地川』 (34) ,『芦の葉』 (38) ,『こしかたの記』 (61) などの随筆集がある。
