Karakalpak language - Karakalpak (English spelling)

It is one of the Turkic languages spoken by approximately 400,000 people (1989) in the Karakalpakh Autonomous Republic in the northwest of the Republic of Uzbekistan. More than 10,000 Karakalpaks also live in Afghanistan. It belongs to the central branch of the Turkic language family and is very closely related to Kazakh. It is divided into a northeastern dialect and a southwestern dialect, with the former forming the basis of the written language. The orthography changed from Arabic-Persian to Latin in 1928, and then to Cyrillic in 1940, but in 1994 the decision was made to Latinize it.
