Japanese: ヤイロチョウ(八色鳥) - ヤイロチョウ（英語表記）fairy pitta

A passerine bird of the Pitta family (illustration). Total length is about 18 cm. As its name suggests, it is a colorful bird, with a green back and half of the wing bases, blue coverts and rump, black primary flight feathers, and large white spots. The head is brown with a black median line and eye line, and a yellow brow. The throat is white, the chest and flanks are yellow, and the abdomen to the tail coverts are red. The tail is black with a blue tip. It is distributed from eastern and southern Asia to Australia, and can be seen in Japan as a summer bird on Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku, but its population is extremely small.

スズメ目ヤイロチョウ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約18cm。その名のように多彩な鳥で，背と翼の基半分は緑色，雨覆と腰は青く，初列風切羽は黒く，大きな白斑がある。頭上は褐色だが黒い頭央線と過眼線があり，眉斑（びはん）は黄色い。のどは白く，胸部と脇は黄色で，腹部から下尾筒（かびとう）は赤い。尾は黒く先端は青色。アジア東部･南部からオーストラリアまで分布し，日本には夏鳥として本州，九州，四国でみられるが，生息数はきわめて少ない。
