...Harvesting is done when the insecticidal substance content is at its highest when the plant is 90% or fully bloomed, and the flower heads are threshed with a threshing machine to dry and prepare the product. The closely related C. coccineum Willd. and C. caucasicum Whn. also contain pyrethroids, and can be used to make mosquito coils and flea powder. However, because they contain less insecticidal substances than C. japonica, they are mainly used for decoration in Japan.
