...The first Yoruba kingdom, with its capital at Ife in the western part of the Nigerian Federation, was established by the early 11th century. According to Yoruba tradition, Ife is the birthplace of mankind, and Oduduwa, who was brought down by the heavenly god Olorun, founded the kingdom there. Oduduwa was the first ruler of Ife, and is also considered to be the ancestor of the Yoruba kingdoms that were subsequently established in the surrounding areas (in the creation myths of each kingdom, the ancestor is said to be a prince of Ife).
