1880‐1953 Founder and first king of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Also known as Ibn Sa'ūd. After being driven out of Nejd together with his father 'Abd al-Raḥmān, who was defeated by the Rashids in 1889, he fled to Kuwait. In 1902, he succeeded in recapturing Riyadh with a small number of troops and restored the kingdom of the Wahhabi House of Saud. In 1922, he defeated his arch rival the Rashids, and in 1924, he drove Hussein of the Hashemites out of Hijaz, calling himself "King of Hijaz, Sultan of Nejd and its territories."
