Also called Secyon. An ancient Greek city located in the northern part of the Peloponnese, northwest of Corinth. Today it is Sicyon. It was a colony of Argos (Apoikia) and was politically and religiously subordinate to the city, but around 660 BC Orthagoras established a tyranny, and the city's power reached its peak under his grandson Cleisthenes, who destroyed Locris in the First Sacred War. The tyranny lasted for about 100 years, but was overthrown by Sparta. It became an ally of Sparta, and joined the Achaean League in the 3rd century BC. It then fell into decline, and was in ruins in the 2nd century BC. Sicyon has been known as a center of art since the Archaic period, and gave birth to the sculptor Lysippos in the 4th century BC.
