Gochō

A Chinese thinker from the Yuan Dynasty. His pen name was Youqing and his pen name was Caolu. He was from Chongren County, Jiangxi Province. Due to his extensive learning, he was favored by the famous Yuan minister Cheng Wenhai (1249-1318) and was given special promotion, becoming a prominent figure in academic and government circles. While his ideology was based on Neo-Confucianism, he tried to revitalize it by introducing Lu Xiangshan's (Jiuyuan) philosophy of mind to prevent it from becoming stubborn. Later, when the theory of Zhu Xi became popular, he was regarded as a pioneer of the theory of Zhu Xi eclecticism. He also excelled in the study of classics, and wrote the famous Yuan Dynasty work "Compilation of the Five Classics," making him a pioneer in Qing Dynasty textual research. Also, because he served a foreign dynasty, his origins and actions were often subject to harsh criticism.

中国、元(げん)代の思想家。字(あざな)は幼清(ようせい)、号は草廬(そうろ)。江西省崇仁県の人。豊かな学殖のために元朝の名臣程文海(ていぶんかい)（1249―1318）の知遇を得て特別の抜擢(ばってき)を受け、学界、官界で重きをなした。思想的には朱子学を中核に据えながらも、それが固陋(ころう)に陥るのを避けるために、陸象山(りくしょうざん)（九淵）の心学を導入して活性化を図った。のち、朱陸論が盛んになると、朱陸折衷論の先駆者と評価された。経書研究にも優れ、元代の名著とされる『五経纂言(さんげん)』を著し、清代考証学の先駆をなした。また異民族王朝に仕えたために、その出処進退はとかく手厳しい評価を受けた。
