[Born] 1732 [Died] December 2, 1791. Farmley, Kilkenny. British politician. Educated at Oxford University, he entered the Irish Parliament in 1759, and was Deputy Treasurer of Ireland from 1775 to 1781. Together with H. Grattan, he sought independence for Irish legislative power from Great Britain, and succeeded in 1782. He opposed the Catholic Emancipation issue, and came into conflict with Grattan. From 1783, he also received a seat in the British Parliament. He proposed parliamentary reform in both parliaments. In 1790, he lost both his British and Irish seats and retired. Flood |
