A general term for late Prakrit. It refers to the new Prakrit language that was established as a written language from the everyday language of the common people around the 7th century, and the state it was in until the modern Indo-Aryan languages began to be established around the 12th century. Grammarists say there are 277 types, but the three main types are Nagara, Brachada, and Upanagara. The ability to use Apabrahsha, as well as Sanskrit and Prakrit, is said to be a requirement for classical Indian poets (→ Sanskrit literature).
