Common snipe (Tachigi)

Japanese: タシギ(田鷸) - タシギ（英語表記）common snipe

A bird of the family Scolopacidae (illustration). Approximately 27 cm long. A medium-sized snipe with a long, straight beak. It breeds in northern Eurasia, the Himalayas, northern North America, and most of South America, migrating to warmer regions in winter. It migrates to Japan in large numbers as a migratory or winter bird. The upper side of the body has complex black markings on a gray-brown background, and the head and back have prominent thick cream-colored vertical lines. The tip of the tail is orange-brown, the chest and flanks are pale yellowish brown, with black vertical stripes on the chest and horizontal stripes on the flanks, and the belly is white.

チドリ目シギ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約27cm。まっすぐで長いくちばしをもった中型のシギ。ユーラシア大陸北部，ヒマラヤ，北アメリカ北部および南アメリカ大陸の大部分で繁殖し，冬は暖かい地方へ移動する。日本には旅鳥または冬鳥として渡来し，数が多い。体の上面は灰褐色の地に黒い複雑な斑紋があり，頭部と背にクリーム色の太い縦の線があって目だつ。尾の先は橙褐色，胸とわきは淡黄褐色で胸には黒い縦斑，わきには横斑があり，腹は白い。
