It is a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean. It is bounded by the coast of the West Siberian lowland and Novaya Zemlya to the west, the Franz Josef Land Archipelago to the northwest, and Severnaya Zemlya to the east. It is connected to the Arctic Ocean Basin in the north, the Barents Sea in the west, and the Laptev Sea in the east. It has an area of 880,000 km2 and an average depth of 127 m, with a maximum depth of 620 m. The Kara Sea is named after the rivers that flow into it, the Yenisei, the Ob, the Pyasina, and the Kara. The Kara Sea lies on the Siberian shelf, and therefore about 40% of its water is shallower than 50 m, and 2% is deeper than 500 m. The shelf is divided by two wide deep-sea troughs in the north. Geologically, the Kara Sea was formed as a result of deglaciation during the most recent glacial period. Brown silt, gray silt, and blue silt are distributed in troughs and deep-sea depressions, sandy silt is distributed on seafloor ridges and shallow waters, and detrital soil is distributed in the northeast.
