[Psychoanalysis after Freud]
Freud viewed the ego passively, as something that controls the drives of the id and adapts to the outside world while facing pressure from the superego, but he ended up not thoroughly examining the ego's functions themselves. Freud's daughter A. Freud and H. Hartmann were the representatives who inherited and developed Freud's research on the ego and clarified the ego's active functions, and the ego psychology that began with them became the mainstream of psychoanalysis in America thereafter. EH Erikson's theory of the psychological and social development of the ego, or identity formation theory, belongs to this lineage and is an extremely useful concept both clinically and sociologically.
