An ancient city located in northeastern Iran, 344 km east of Tehran. Population 13,000 (1966). Located on the transportation route between Tehran and Mashhad, it is the commercial center of the city. Many ruins can be seen in the city and its surrounding areas. The large ruins of Tepe Hissar are located 1 km south of the city, where excavations by Herzfeld and EFSchmidt in the first half of the 20th century uncovered the remains of a settlement dating to 3500-1600 BC, a palace from the Sassanid period, and a fire temple. イラン北東部,テヘランの東344kmに位置する古都。人口1万3000(1966)。テヘランとマシュハドを結ぶ交通路上にあり,商業の中心地。市街および周辺に多くの遺跡が見られる。市南方1kmの地には大遺跡テペ・ヒッサールTepe Hissarがあり,20世紀前半にヘルツフェルト,シュミットE.F.Schmidtにより,前3500‐前1600年ころの集落址やササン朝時代の宮殿址,拝火神殿址が発掘された。
