A full-length novel by Abe Kobo. Originally published by Shinchosha in 1962 (Showa 37). Niki Junpei goes on an insect collecting trip, but is forced to be trapped inside a wall of sand and to live with a certain woman. He struggles day after day against the onslaught of sand. It won the 14th Yomiuri Literature Prize. In 1964, it was made into a film directed by Teshigahara Hiroshi (1927-2001). It has been translated into over 20 languages, including England and France, and established Niki's status as an international author.
