Woman in the Dunes

A full-length novel by Abe Kobo. Originally published by Shinchosha in 1962 (Showa 37). Niki Junpei goes on an insect collecting trip, but is forced to be trapped inside a wall of sand and to live with a certain woman. He struggles day after day against the onslaught of sand. Eventually, he persistently tries to become sand and see things through its eyes, discovering a new self and achieving freedom. This masterpiece allegorically explores this process. It won the 14th Yomiuri Literature Prize. In 1964, it was made into a film directed by Teshigahara Hiroshi (1927-2001). It has been translated into over 20 languages, including England and France, and established Niki's status as an international author.

安部公房(こうぼう)の長編小説。1962年（昭和37）新潮社より書下ろし刊行。昆虫採集の旅に出た仁木順平は、強制的に砂の壁の中に閉じ込められ、ある女との生活を強いられる。襲いくる砂と格闘する過酷な日々。やがて彼は、砂になり砂の目で物をみる体験を執拗(しつよう)に続け、新しい自己を発見し自由を獲得する。そのプロセスを寓意(ぐうい)的に追求した秀作。第14回読売文学賞を受賞。64年、勅使河原宏(てしがわらひろし)（1927―2001）の監督により映画化。英仏をはじめ20数か国で翻訳され、国際的作家としての地位を決定づけた。
