Land bridge theory - rikkyosetsu

Japanese: 陸橋説 - りっきょうせつ

In some cases, there is a strong affinity between fossils found on two continents separated by an ocean, and the land bridge theory posits that a land mass connecting the two continents once existed in the middle ocean to explain the affinity of these fossils. For example, to explain the affinity of Paleo-Mesozoic fossils of Africa and South America, the land bridge theory posits that a continent connecting the two continents existed in the present-day South Atlantic until the Cretaceous period. This theory ignores the differences in the crustal composition of the ocean and continents, and cannot explain the similarities in the geological structures of the two continents, so it has since been explained more rationally by the theory of continental drift.

大洋にへだてられた二つの大陸に産する化石群の間に近縁性が認められる場合があるが，この化石群の近縁性を説明するために，両大陸を連結する陸地がかつて中間の海洋部分に存在していたと考えるのが陸橋land bridge説で，例えば，アフリカと南アメリカの古･中生代化石群の近縁性を説明するため，両大陸をつなぐ大陸が現在の南大西洋域に白亜紀まで存在したとするような考え方である。この説では，海洋と大陸の地殻構成の違いを無視することになり，また両大陸の地質構造の類似性が説明できず，その後，大陸移動説によってより合理的に説明されるようになった。
