A young Roman officer and saint. Around 303, he was beheaded and martyred in Diospolis, Palestine, for refusing to renounce his faith against the orders of Emperor Diocletian. Veneration of him spread from the East to the West in the 4th century, and he was associated with Perseus's slaying of monsters in Greek mythology, and many of his heroic deeds are told. In the 12th century, a legend arose that he slayed an evil dragon, saved the king's daughter, and converted the country to Christianity. This legend was often used as a painting material for Eastern Orthodox icons. He was especially popular in England, and after the Council of Oxford (1222), he became the patron saint of England. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, he is revered as the patron saint of soldiers. The Russians made him the patron of their army and arsenals.
