Imai

Japanese: 今井 - いまい
Imai
The name of Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture. It originated as a temple town established within the grounds of an Ikko sect dojo (later known as Shonenji Temple), and is famous for its historic streetscape. In 1541, Imai Hyobu Toyohisa of Ishiyama Honganji (Osaka Gobo) built a dojo for the Honganji temple and laid out the town layout within the temple grounds. According to the Imai clan genealogy, the temple grounds were armed, but were defeated by Oda Nobunaga in 1575. In the early Edo period, the temple stretched 610m east to west and 310m north to south, with nine gates, four of which were closed at night. It had an autonomous organization with the three families of Imanishi and Ozaki, and later Ueda, as head elders, and was initially a Shogunate territory, but later became a Shogunate territory after passing through the Yamato Koriyama domain. During the feudal domain period, it was called Imai-cho, and it became a prosperous town with six towns, Minami, Nishi, Higashi, Kita, Ima, and Shin, with about 1,200 houses and a population of about 4,000. Eight houses, including the Imanishi family home, have been designated as Important Cultural Properties by the national government, and 80% of the current approximately 800 houses are private homes from the Edo period.
