The most prestigious title among the Edo Shogunate's official painters. A term used in contrast to the Omote-eshi. They were required to attend the Oe-ya room of Edo Castle on a fixed day each month and perform duties for the Shogunate, such as painting decorative paintings for palaces. The Kano family passed this title down through the generations throughout the Edo period, and the four families of Oku-eshi were the Kano of Kajihashi, who inherited the lineage of Tan'yū, the Kano of Kobiki-cho, who was Naonobu, the Kano of Nakahashi, and the Kano of Hama-cho, who was Tsunenobu's second son, Minenobu.
