An evergreen shrub of the family Acanthaceae. It is found in Honshu (Shima Peninsula), Kyushu (Goto Islands, Amakusa, western Kagoshima Prefecture and south), the Ryukyu Islands, Taiwan, and central and southern mainland China, growing on rocky coasts. It is about 1m tall and completely glabrous. The leaves are fleshy, oblong, sharply pointed, 5-10cm long, 2-3.5cm wide, and the base gradually transitions into a petiole. From January to May, several flowers grow in bunches in the leaf axils and open sideways. The pedicel is about 2cm long, the calyx is bell-shaped with five deep lobes, and the lobes are lanceolate with acute tips. The corolla is pale reddish purple, funnel-shaped, 2-2.5cm long, with dark reddish brown markings on the inside, and the lobes are elliptical with blunt tips. The fruit is egg-shaped, pointed, and pale brown when ripened. The endocarp is thick and woody and contains several oblong seeds, which are spread by the tide.
