The communication procedures and rules in network systems such as computers and telephones are called protocols. The original meaning of the term is a treaty protocol. In a communication system, communication is carried out according to predetermined procedures. For example, this may include the format and voltage of the electrical signals used to send messages, the shape of the cable, and the method of correcting errors. Communication is only possible when each device that makes up the network completely follows these procedures. This is the same as when humans communicate with each other using language.

コンピューターや電話などのネットワークシステムにおける通信手順や規約のことをプロトコルと呼ぶ。もとの意味は条約の議定書のことである。通信システムでは，あらかじめ決めれた通信手順に従って通信が行われる。たとえば，メッセージを送るための電気信号の形式や電圧，ケーブルの形状，誤りの訂正方法などである。ネットワークを構成する各装置がそれらに従った手順を完全に守ることによって初めて通信が可能となる。これは，人間同士が言語を使用して会話を行う場合と同じである。
