A Mahayana Buddhist Buddha. The head of the Western Pure Land paradise, he is the Buddha who saves all living things. He was introduced to Japan in the early 7th century. Faith in Amida, which believed that one could go to the Pure Land by chanting the Nembutsu, became popular during the Kamakura period, and Pure Land sects such as Jodo, Jodo Shinshu, and Jishu were established.
