Shizugatake

A mountain located in Nagahama City, northern Shiga Prefecture. It is 422 meters above sea level. It overlooks Lake Yogo to the north and Lake Biwa to the south, and was a strategically important location controlling the Hokkoku Kaido and Shiotsu Kaido roads. It is known as the site of a battle between Hashiba (Toyotomi) Hideyoshi and Shibata Katsuie in 1583 (Tensho 11). It is the site of one of the eight scenic spots of Lake Biwa, "Fresh Snow, a Great View of Shizugatake," and offers excellent views. There is a lift to the top from Kinomoto-cho Ooto on the eastern foot of the mountain. The mountains around Shizugatake had been a traffic obstacle for a long time, but in 1927 (Showa 2), the Shizugatake Tunnel was completed, connecting the east and west, and National Route 8 currently runs through it.

滋賀県北部、長浜市(ながはまし)にある山。標高422メートル。北に余呉(よご)湖、南に琵琶(びわ)湖を臨み、北国街道、塩津街道を抑える戦略上の要地であった。1583年（天正11）羽柴(はしば)（豊臣(とよとみ)）秀吉と柴田(しばた)勝家との合戦の場として知られる。琵琶湖八景「新雪、賤ヶ岳の大観」の地で展望に優れ、東麓(とうろく)の木之本町大音(きのもとちょうおおと)から登山リフトがある。なお、賤ヶ岳一帯の山地は長く交通上の障害となっていたが、1927年（昭和2）賤ヶ岳トンネルが完成し東西が結ばれ、現在国道8号が通じている。
