Capital gains are the profits derived from an increase in the value of assets, as opposed to income gains, which are dividends and interest income from securities. In Japan's income tax law, the term capital gains is used. In developed welfare nations where tax rates are rising, there is a growing demand for fairness in the tax burden, but taxation of capital gains has always been a major point of contention.

資産価値の増加から生ずる利得を，有価証券の配当および利子収入であるインカム･ゲインincome gainに対し，キャピタル･ゲインcapital gainとよび，資本利得という訳語が一般的である。日本の所得税法では譲渡所得という用語が使われている。租税負担率のますます高まりつつある先進福祉国家において，租税負担の公平に対する要求は強くなってきているが，キャピタル･ゲインに対する課税はつねに大きな争点を形成している。
