Qadi Al-Askar

...Qualifications for appointment required that the qadi be an upright (adl) Muslim and have a thorough knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence. In the Mamluk dynasty, four qaḍāts representing the four Sunni schools of law were appointed, while in the Ottoman Empire, two qaḍā's of the Hanafi school were the equivalent. Several qaḍā's (judicial districts) were established under the local administrative divisions of sanjaks (provinces), and each qaḍā's appointed qaḍā's (with a daily salary of less than 150 aqchas) and qaḍā's (with a daily salary of more than 150 aqchas) were appointed by the qaḍā's (provinces), but from the 16th century onwards, Shaykh al-Islam held the power to appoint and dismiss qaḍā's.
