Okikamuro Island

An island located in the southeast of Suo-Oshima (Oshima) in the southeastern part of Yamaguchi Prefecture. It belongs to Suo-Oshima Town, Oshima County. Its area is 0.95 square kilometers. It faces Oshima across the narrow Kamuro-Zeto and is connected to Oshima by the Okikamuro Bridge. During the Tenpo era (1830-1844), it had 448 houses and a population of 2,394, and flourished as a port town along the inland sea route. Since the Meiji era, it has been known as a fishing village that used line fishing and longlines to fish in the waters off Korea, the Yellow Sea, and even off the coast of Taiwan. 山口県南東部、周防(すおう)大島（大島）南東方にある島。大島郡周防大島町に属する。面積0.95平方キロメートル。狭い家室迫戸(かむろぜと)を隔てて大島と対置し、沖家室大橋で結ばれる。天保(てんぽう)年間（1830～1844）には家数448軒、人口2394人を数え、内海航路に沿う港町として栄えた。明治以降は一本釣りや延縄(はえなわ)をもって朝鮮近海、黄海、台湾沖までも出漁した漁村として知られている。人口202（2000）。
