Most of them are small, with a body length of 9-20cm, but the smallest is the Baltic short-eared jerboa (Salpingotus michaelis) (body length 3.6-4.7cm, tail length 7.2-9.4cm), and the Japanese harvest mouse (body length 5.2-7.1cm, tail length 5.2-9.1cm). The largest species in terms of body length are the Phloeomys cumingi (body length 28-48.5cm, tail length 20-35cm, weight 1.5-2kg), the Sumatran bamboo rat Rhizomys sumatrensis (body length 48cm, tail length 20cm, weight 4kg), and the Japanese long-haired rat (body length 28cm, tail length 37cm, weight 630g). They are better adapted to gnawing at harder objects than the squirrels and hystrixs.
