Japan's leading daily economic newspaper. It was first published in Tokyo on December 2, 1876 (Meiji 9) as the "Chugai Bukka Shinpo" (weekly) by Masuda Takashi, a pioneer in the Japanese trading industry who presided over Mitsui & Co., Ltd. It became a daily publication in July 1885, and on January 27, 1889, it changed its title to "Chugai Shogyo Shinpo" and began reporting general domestic and international news in addition to economic and financial articles. In October 1924 (Taisho 13), an evening edition was published, and in December, the "Osaka Chugai Shogyo Shinpo" was launched. Since then, it has continued to develop as a specialized economic newspaper, and in 1941 (Showa 16), it became independently managed for the first time when it acquired all of the stock held by Mitsui headquarters. In 1942, as part of wartime newspaper consolidation, the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun and Keizai Jiji Shimpo merged and absorbed 11 other industry papers, changing its title to Nihon Sangyo Keizai; at this time the Osaka Chugai Shogyo Shimpo ceased publication. (Note that the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun was republished under the title Kogyo Shimbun in September 1945, just after the end of World War II, and was revived in 1950 under its current title, Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, and is published by the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun Co., Ltd.) After the Second World War, the paper changed its title to "Nihon Keizai Shimbun" on March 1, 1946 (Showa 21). Since then, the paper's influence has grown dramatically along with the rapid growth of the Japanese economy, with printing starting in Osaka in January 1951, followed by printing in the west (Fukuoka) in 1964, Sapporo in 1970, Hirosaki in 1975, and in the 1980s Nagoya, followed by Matsumoto and Hiroshima, with the aim of expanding nationwide using a distributed printing method, and in 2008 (Heisei 20) it began printing in Okinawa, the first national newspaper to do so. For overseas markets, the paper launched the weekly English-language economic paper " THE JAPAN ECONOMIC JOURNAL " (English Nikkei, renamed " THE NIKKEI WEEKLY " in 1991) in 1963 (Showa 38). The paper also led the industry in introducing computers, and in 1970 launched the computerized economic information service "NEEDS," becoming a pioneer in electronic media. In January 1972, the company completed the online, fully automated Nikkei newspaper editing and production system (ANNECS), and in 1974 launched the computerized online information service Nikkei Telecom (an English version was launched in 1986). In 1980, the company began printing the English version of the Nikkei in New York, becoming the first Japanese English language newspaper to do so. In 1987, the company established a trilateral global editing system by establishing a regional bureau for the Americas and a regional bureau for Europe in New York and London, respectively. The international edition of the paper is printed in seven locations overseas: New York, Los Angeles, Brussels, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney, and Bangkok. In addition to the paper, the company also publishes four specialty papers: Nikkei MJ (Marketing Journal) (a new title for the Nikkei Distribution Newspaper), Nikkei Business Daily, Nikkei Veritas (an investment and financial information paper), and THE NIKKEI WEEKLY . In 2010, the newspaper launched the online edition of the Nikkei Shimbun, promoting its diversification and internationalization as a "comprehensive economic information organization," and has grown into an economic newspaper that is considered on par with the American newspaper, the Wall Street Journal, and the British newspaper, the Financial Times. The circulation is approximately 3.02 million copies for the morning edition and 1.6 million copies for the evening edition (2010).
