Ankokuji Temple

Japanese: 安国寺 - あんこくじ
Ankokuji Temple
A Rinzai Tofukuji temple in Ayabe, Kyoto Prefecture. The main image is Shaka Nyorai. Originally called Kofukuji, it was renamed Ankokuji around 1342-1350 when Ashikaga brothers Takauji and Tadayoshi Ashikaga built Ankokuji and Rishoto. Takauji and Tadayoshi's mother Kiyoko was born and raised in Uesugi-sho (present-day Ayabe) and was a descendant of the Uesugi clan, whose family name was Uesugi-sho (present-day Ayabe). Kofukuji was her clan temple. It is likely that this connection led to the temple being called Ankokuji. As the head of the Ankokuji temples in various provinces, the temple was heavily protected by the Muromachi shogunate, and in 1371 it was included in the list of Shozan temples, and in 1414 it was included in the list of Kyoto's Ten Temples. It houses Ankokuji documents, including a letter from Uesugi Tomosada and a donation from Ashikaga Takauji.
