...Books in the form of books are also called shōjō chō or shōdatsu chō. For example, the shogunate had the prices of important commodities such as gold, silver, and coins, as well as rice, soybeans, and oil, written down on a regular or temporary basis for the purpose of price control, and these were called shōjō chō. Also, the machikata shōjō and mura seichō, which required the general information of each town and village, such as the number of households, number of people, land, and occupation, were written down, and these are typical shōjō (books).
